Oceaneers

Problem

Through several meetings with the creators of Oceaneers, we learned that as a newly established organization, they struggled with membership and establishing a strong local community. They wanted us to design a website that would lead the user, particularly someone with an interest in the ocean, to ultimately sign up to be an Oceaneer. By taking notes on the website ourselves, we learned that the primary issue they had with their website was the easiness and clarity of it. Through initial user interviews, we found that users were unsure of what Oceaneers was, what their service offers, and why they should join. They found that the information presented on the website was overwhelming, disorganized, and cluttered.

Solution

Working with two other UX/UI designers, we conducted initial user interviews (non-Oceaneers and current Oceaneers) to understand what they disliked and liked about the website. We reorganized the hierarchy of the website and also condensed the information. We changed a lot of the UI aspects and wording of the site to make it more professional so that users would take their mission of reducing the consumption of animal products and promoting ocean sustainability more seriously. In order to encourage the user to join Oceaneers, we included a "Join Us" button at the top and bottom of each page. We also made sure to further incentivize users to join by emphasizing the community aspect of Oceaneers more through the language and information presented, as that is what makes the organization unique. Users in initial interviews stated that is what they liked best about Oceaneers because they can meet others who share the same interests in ocean activities and cleaner eating.

What I've Done

  • Interviewed users on their thoughts and pain points of original website

  • Navigated and took detailed notes on pros/cons of original website

  • Conducted competitor research on other similar organizations' websites

  • Created a user flow map of user journey through website

  • Created and presented low-fidelity and high-fidelity wireframes, visualizing and designing significant parts of 'Why You Should Care,' 'Join Us,'  page

  • Prototyped high-fidelity wireframes
